Manuel Quezada 28-4-1: After the beating he took from Klitschko, Arreolas handlers probably wont want to put him in too tough, but his spring comeback will most likely be on HBO and the Time Warner owned company wont pay big money for a set-up with someone like Cliff Couser, but Quezada would probably be acceptable because hes a puncher, has a good record which includes a seventeen fight win streak and recently surprised Travis Walker by scoring a first round knockout. Plus Quezada is promoted by Dan Goosen who also promotes Arreola, which should make it easy to get the deal done. People might think that Goosen wont want to match his two fighters against each other, but he matched Arreola with Walker last November. Plus Goosen is probably realistic about Quezadas prospects of becoming a big time heavyweight attraction and Quezada will probably jump at the chance to fight on HBO and make two or two hundred fifty thousand dollars so has to be considered one of the front-runners for Chriss spring comeback.
James Toney 72-6-3: Toney has been working with Arreolas promoter, Dan Goosen, for quite some time. They have a good relationship so it wouldnt be hard to work out a deal. Plus HBO just might accept James as an opponent. Even though he is forty, he came in pretty good shape for his last bout, and hes a first ballot hall of famer and still brings quite of bit of name recognition to the table. Plus he would probably provide Arreola with the type of work he needs; multiple rounds against an experienced world class fighter. The thing is James is going to have to realize that a title shot against one of the Klitschkos isnt coming any time soon and not price himself out of the fight. If HBO comes up with three or four hundred thous Toney should jump on it because a win just might catapult him into another major title fight. As for Arreola I think its a very winnable fight for him if he comes in halfway decent shape. I know Toney is a counter ?puncher, but he cant fight two minutes a round much less three and I think Chris would tag him all night long as Toney tries to counter with his back against the ropes. Veteran writer David Avila who works for the Prensa and Riverside Press Telegram newspapers disagrees and thinks it would be a dangerous fight for Arreola, "Thats a bad fight for Chris because Toney is a counterpuncher, he likes when guys like to come forward, he would counter Chris all night." Maybe five or six years ago, but not today.
David Haye 22-1: There is some bad blood between Haye and Arreola. The flamboyant Brit bad mouthed Arreola in Ring Magazine and Hayes career choices have negatively impacted Arreola. Chris was the front runner for a fight with Vitali Klitschko in the early part of the summer, but then Haye negotiated a fight with Vitali and Chris was left out in the cold. Then when Haye pulled out of the fight with Klitschko, Arreola ended up taking the bout with Klitschko on seven weeks notice. Subsequently Arreolas trainer Henry Ramirez stated that Haye "had a yeast infection" and Arreola has stated, "I would knock David Haye out." In fact, David Haye is probably the only heavyweight out there that Arreola would actually like to beat up. The fight is unlikely because David is fighting Valuev for the WBA title and a win is anything, but guaranteed. Even if Haye does win he will probably look for a big money unification fight with one of the Klitschkos or the WBA will probably shove John Ruiz down his throat so a Arreola-Haye bout doesnt seem likely to happen during the course of the next ten months.
Kali Meehan 35-3: This fight would make a lot of sense for Arreola. Meehan is a huge heavyweight with a high ranking and limited ability and Arreola would gain experience fighting the big super-heavyweights. Meehan is a big stationary heavyweight whos easy to hit, and he makes for exciting fights, remember the war he had with Lemon Brewster in 2004. And hes ranked number three by the WBA so a victory over Meehan would catapult Arreola into one of the top spots in the WBA rankings which could eventually lead to a bout with the winner of Valuev-Haye. The only problem is Meehan is with Don King and the charismatic promoter probably wont want to risk having a fighter whos positioned to fight for a heavyweight title lose to another promoters fighter unless hes sufficiently compensated and an Arreola-Meehan bout isnt that kind of money fight so the fight seems unlikely.
Oleg Maskaev 36-6: Right before Klitschkos fight with David Haye was announced, a fight between Maskaev and Arreola was planned for October, but Haye pulled out of the fight with Klitschko and Arreola stepped in. Some of you may think Arreola needed to more experience, but you dont turn down a major heavyweight title fight thats accompanied with a 2.5 million dollar payday. You just dont. Because the two camps have already been to the negotiating table, a fight with Maskaev would probably be fairly easy to make. Plus the former Soviet soldier has a number three ranking in the WBC and is a former world champion. Hes also slow, ponderous, and powerful which would make for an exciting fight with the ultra-aggressive Arreola. The only roadblock now is that Vitali Klitschko is in need of an opponent and his people have already mentioned Maskaev as a possibility. The fight would be huge in the Russian speaking countries of the former Soviet Union so Maskaev isnt going to fight Arreola if he thinks he has a title fight around the corner even though it would be an exciting clash that HBO would pay for.
