Wladimir Klitschko`s world title
defence against David Haye on Saturday has been called off. David Haye suffered an unspecified injury in training rumoured
to be a wrist problem. The bout was due to take place at Schalke O4 FCs Veltins Arena in Germany. An estimated 60,000
tickets have been sold in this hotly anticipated event. A number of options now seem to be on the table. Klitschko`s
management would consider staging the contest at a later date at the same venue. This will all depend on the extent of Haye`s
injury. Wladimir himself thinks another opponent may be found. He stated, "I`m speechless. We will have to get someone else
in. I will take whoever it is". Coincidencially Nicolay Valuev`s world title defence last Saturday was called off at short
notice. Rumours are circulating that a deal between the two fighters to meet on Saturday in a unification fight is
desperately trying to be trashed out. This would be an excellent contest but negotiations in the past to get these fighters
to meet have been unsuccessful.
The Klitschko Haye contest had been the most eagerly anticipated heavyweight contest in
years. The news of it been called off has come as a bitter disappointment to fans around the world. Haye successfully brought
the fight to the mainstream media with his antics in the build up to the contest. These antics included wearing a t-shirt to
the fight press conferences with a picture depicting the decapitated heads of both Klitschko brothers. Obviously this was of
great offence to his Ukrainian rival who vowed to punish him. Fans will be hoping the fight can be rearranged for a date in
the near future. If a fight can be arranged against Valuev on Saturday, that could be an excellent alternative. This would
leave us a step closer to a unified champion. Otherwise we`ll have 60,000 disappointed heavyweight fans, that is certainly
not what the devision needs!
