Britains David haye beat giant Nikolay Valuev on points to capture the WBA World heavyweight title. Haye was the winner on two scorecards 116-112 while another judge scored the fight a draw at 114 each. Haye who was giving away seven stone to his huge opponent became Britains first heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis. The Londoner started the busier fighter but struggled to land any telling shots against his awkward opponent. After all the talk of an explosive knockout, the fight was largely uneventful with Haye electing to hit and run. The strategy while not pretty to watch was effective enough. Haye believes he may have broken his hand during the contest. "I think Ive almost certainly broken my hand but its a small price to pay..... I caught him with a right in the second or third and let me tell you his head is solid, it felt like a brick. I just couldnt use it from there on in." This is the first step in Hayes plan to unify the division. He stated, "here I am, heavyweight champion of the world and Im loving it. Im going to clean up the division." This is the second defeat of Nikolay Valuevs career. The big Russian will surely be back though and was certainly not beaten comprehensively.
David Haye could be exactly what the heavyweight division has been crying out for. His aggressive style where he continually looks for a knockout is exciting to watch. He has 21 kos in 24 fights to his credit. Outside the ring he is charasmatic and controversial. His publicity stunts outside the ring while insulting to some are publicising the division and his popularity is growing rapidly in the states. Also Haye is anxious for the big fights and doesnt seem interested in ducking anyone. Right from his debut in the division he has been calling out the Klitschko brothers. With Haye as WBA champion, a unification fight with either Klitschko brother is a mouth watering prospect.
