Klitschko KOs Chambers in 12

Wladimir Klitschko retained his world titles with a twelve round stoppage victory over Eddie Chambers. It was the champions 48th knockout in 57 contests while Chambers lost for only the second time in his career. Klitschko dominated the fight from behind his powerful jab and it could be argued that he won every round. The contest was not a very attractive affair though and did not make entertaining viewing. Klitschkos trainer Emmanuel Steward pleaded with the champion to be less cautous and let his punches go. Finally in round number twelve, Klitschko put Chambers out of his misery. "I don't think he ever really hit me, but it wasn't easy. I wanted to be too perfect maybe," Klitschko commented afterwards. Chambers was very defensive throughout the fight and was concentrating on survival rather than winning the fight. It is widely regarded that Chambers is the best American heavyweight at the moment. This fight exposed the gulf in class between the American heavyweights and their Klitschko counterparts.

Klitschko would now like to meet Britains David Haye, the WBA Champion having said before the fight, "I would prefer to fight him in a soccer arena but I would also face him in a car park if necessary". Haye pulled out of a previous meeting of the two due to a back injury. However that fight may have to wait a while as Klitschko will have to face his IBF mandatory opponent Alexander Povetkin next.
