On Saturday the 3rd of April, David Haye will defend his WBA title for the first time against John "The Quiet Man" Ruiz. The fight will take place in front of a huge crowd at Chelsea's Stanford Bridge football ground. Haye will start as favourite and is looking to put on a great show in front of his home supporters. The majority of viewers will be dreading the possibility of an upset. Victory for Haye can bring some mouth watering contests in the future. Most notibly unification fights against the Klitschko brothers. A loss for Haye would see him removed from the limelight and rob heavyweight boxing of its biggest fights in many years. Ruiz would rule as champion again and dismal contests such as his fights against Toney and Rahman would be the most fans would have to look forward to.
John Ruiz will be a difficult opponent for Haye. Ruiz has huge experience in heavyweight title contests. He has fought and beaten top contenders such as Evander Holyfield, Andrew Golota and Hasim Rahman to name but a few. He has a difficult style to overcome and can frustrate fighters by holding. His "jab and grab" tactics, boring to watch for the viewer, are effective nonetheless. Haye will be trying to look good but Ruiz could frustrate him and start winning rounds. Haye has huge power but Ruiz has a strong chin and has shown great durability in the past. He has only been stopped once, a first round knock out from big hitting David Tua. His durability is something Haye is aware of. "He's a lot tougher and a lot more durable than a lot of people give him credit for" said Londoner Haye. He continued, "I can't allow him to upset my rhythm. I've got to go out there in the first round and apply my skill set and do what I do best.
The Ruiz camp has said their fighter is training better than ever. However many critics believe that at age 38 and 54 fights, John Ruiz is past his best. If Ruiz can fight to the best of his ability, he can take the fight to the scorecards. For the future of heavyweight boxing, most fans will be desparate that Haye can do enough to win.
