Haye Defends Title in Style

David Haye successfully defended his WBA Championship title with a ninth round stoppage of John Ruiz. Haye had Ruiz down and in real trouble in the first. Ruiz showed great heart and determination and was able to get through the round. Haye was then docked two points for rabbit punching at the end of the round. Ruiz was competitive and was beginning to come back into the fight. However Haye had Ruiz down again in the fifth and sixth round. Ruiz continued to struggle against Hayes speed and power. In round nine, the Ruiz corner had seen enough and threw in the towel. It was an explosive performance from the champion. It was only the second time Ruiz had been stopped in his career as a pro.

The fight was a great spectacle and it was a fantastic night for heavyweight boxing. The reputation of the division can only benefit from such a contest. Haye is quickly establishing himself as the most popular heavyweight in the division. On this performance many would fancy him to dethrone one of the Klitschko brothers. Haye commented after the fight that if he hit either Klitschko brother with the shots he hit John Ruiz they would fall. Apparenty Haye has to defend the title against Valuev as they had a rematch clause in their contract when Haye fought for the title. Fans will be hoping that Valuev steps aside and allows unification to happen.

Haye insulted Americas top heavyweights, Eddie Chambers and Chris Arreola. He said they are "a disgrace to boxing" referring to their weight in previous contests. A Haye Arreola fight would be very interesting. Both are exciting, attacking fighters. It remains to be seen if Arreola retaliates and sparks a war of words. Whatever happens, there are some excellent contests ahead involving the Hayemaker.
